Here’s all the information you need to create these shimmering Turquoise Mason Jar Tabletop Lanterns. They’re quick, affordable and so easy to make.
See the supply list located at the bottom of this page.
Step 1: Disassemble the Lids
The lids come with straws and a plastic ring that connects to the lid where the straw is inserted. You will need to remove the plastic ring. This provides a perfect hole to insert the wick through.
Step 2: Cut Down the Wick
The wick is 6.75-inches long which is half an inch too long. Use scissors to cut 1/2-inch off from one of the ends of the wick. The shortened length will allow the coupling fitting to lay flat on top of the lid.
Step 3: Thread the wick through the Lid and coupling
Thread the wick up through the bottom of the lid and then through the bottom of the coupling as shown below. Pull about 1/4-inch of wick through the top of the coupling and lay the coupling on top of the lid. The coupling will just sit on top of the lid, there’s no need to glue or otherwise attach it.
Step 4: Fill the Jars with Fuel
Fill the mason jar with the lamp oil. I filled mine about half full. The Ultra Pure Paraffin Lamp Oil fuel will allow you to use the lanterns inside or out.
Step 5: Prime the Wick and Light
The wick needs to be primed which means that the fuel must saturate the entire length of the wick. To speed up this process you (do this with the lid tightly screwed on) by picking up the jar and swirling it so the fuel wets the length of the wick. Light the wick and wait for the fuel to be drawn up into the top part of the wick. Once its lit, let it burn for a little while to make sure its fully primed. The next time it will light easily.
Step 6: Attach the Lantern to the Pillar Lantern Stand
The sticky cell pads are STICKY! Start by peeling back only one side of the cellophane cover. Holding onto the second cover, position it in the center of the coaster with the sticky side down. With the second cover still on, press it down to fully secure it to the coaster. Peel back the second cellophane cover and position the lantern on top. This will keep the lantern securely in place while allowing for removal when you need to refuel the jars.
